How to use Psychology in Marketing
Halloween Edition 2023

It's that time of year again: Halloween!
The time for ghosts, goblins, and terrifyingly effective
marketing campaigns.
That's right. Halloween is a
great time to use psychological tricks to get your customers' attention and
make them more likely to buy from you. In this blog post, we'll share 6
psychological tricks that you can use to make your marketing more effective
this Halloween.
But don't worry, these tricks
aren't the stuff of nightmares. They're based on sound scientific research and
have been proven to work.
Let's quickly touch base with a
little bit of background.
The psychology of marketing gives
marketers an understanding of humans to help influence consumer behaviour to
make purchases or take action in a specific way.
I found this definition on Canva to
explain the strategy best:
In short, understanding the how
and why behind the way people think and do, help you improve your marketing campaigns
and develop a stronger brand identity.

marketing to the next level, read on.

6 Psychological Tricks (and Treats) to Make Your Marketing Terrifyingly Effective This Halloween
Trick number 1
The fear factor:
The
fear of missing out (FOMO) phenomenon is my favourite trick.
People
are more likely to act when they feel like they're missing out on something. So
create limited-time offers, exclusive discounts, and early access promotions to
get your customers excited and buying.
Treat: Offer a 24-hour sale on your most popular product, or give
early access to your new product to people who sign up for your email list.
Halloween
Special: 20% Off All Black Dresses (see what I did there?)
Available
for 48 Hours Only
This
ad creates a sense of urgency and scarcity. People know that the offer is only
available for a limited time and that the dresses are low in stock.
Trick number 2
The power of nostalgia:
People normally buy from a brand that makes them feel
something. So use your marketing skills to spark some positive emotions like
happiness, excitement, and grattitude.
Treat: Run a campaign – “Imagine what
you could do with an extra 20% in sales. You could hire more employees, expand
your business, or simply take a vacation. All you have to do is try our marketing
software today."
Use Emotional Branding by creating a brand personality. A
brand personality is a set of human characteristics that are associated with a
brand, such as being friendly, reliable, or innovative. So by creating a brand
personality that your audience can feel, you establish a sense of trust and
familiarity with your customers.
And, remember that colour psychology can create
the right mood. Red says excitement and passion, while blue is associated
with trust and security. To get attention with your Halloween marketing, Use Orange
and Black.
Trick number 3
Mind Games
Subtly get your brand into your customers' minds and let them
think it's their idea.
You might have heard about Priming. It is a marketing technique
that uses subtle cues to influence consumers' subconscious minds and make them
more prone to buy a product or service. It works by exposing consumers to a
stimulus, such as a word, image, or sound, that is associated with the product
or service being marketed. This stimulus can then activate relevant mental
representations and associations in consumers' minds, which can influence their
subsequent behaviour.
Another popular strategy is Cognitive dissonance. It's that
feeling of discomfort that you get when your beliefs and actions don’t match up.
With the “free trial” or “Money back” options,
people can try your product without risk, and they're more likely to stick with
it even if they're not sure they need it.
The Decoy effect: I'm taking about offering three products.
You want your customers to choose the middle one? Add a decoy product that's
less appealing and watch what happens.
Treat: Go
ahead with the "limited
edition" or "exclusive" promotions. And instead of saying "Buy our product and
get 20% off," say "Save 20% on our product, or miss out on the best
deal of your life." And make sure to support
your local Coffee Café by ordering the Large coffee and not the Decoy Medium
even when you would be happy with the small coffee if it was the only other
option.
Trick number 4
The sweet spot:
Psychological
pricing is when businesses use pricing in a way that appeals to
their customers' subconscious mind to get them to buy an item.
Anchoring is an interesting psychological trick.
People would rather choose an option that they're presented with first.
Treat: Promote your products or services by starting off with a higher price and a 50% discount. Your customers will feel like they are getting a great deal, plus your products will have a high value. Stick to the R9,99. I know it's boring but it is still one of the most successful marketing strategies.
Trick number 5
Social proof:
People tend to buy something if they see that other people
are using it and liking it. So use social proof in your marketing by displaying
customer testimonials, social media shares, and product reviews. Your Brand
will be trusted and valued.
Treat: Add a customer testimonial carousel to your homepage,
or highlight social media posts where people are talking about your product.
Trick number 6
Magical Storytelling:
People love stories. Stories can make us laugh, cry, and feel
everything in between.
Use the this power to create an emotional
connection with your audience. Who wouldn't want to be part of a brand's epic
tale?

Treat: For Halloween, you can use
storytelling to connect with your customers on a personal level. Write a blog
post about the history of Halloween or create a video ad that tells a
Halloween-themed story. Remember to link your Story to your Social Media Posts
and emails.
